Secret Self Portraits

Check out the clever self portrait work of Liu Bolin at:

http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/meet-the-real-life-invisible-man.html

What do you think of this idea?
Do you think a self portrait NEEDS to feature the person's face?
What is he telling you about HIMSELF with this work?
Think psychologically, if a person does not include their FACE in a self portrait, what does that say about them???

I don't think a self portrait necessarily needs to involve a clear image of a person's face. But by not showing your face it kind of tells that a person is a bit insecure. It still shows interesting aspects of a person, though.

Wow, this guy has issues. He's obviously uncomfortable with who he is as a perosn and an individual. In trying to blend in with the stuff around him, he demonstrates the need to have expressions and righteous vulgarity sprayed forth to vanquish his enemies courage. Portraits are portraits of what we're trying to perserve, I gues sif you have an ugly face you shouldn't have your facial features as prominent.

i don't think a self portrait really needs to have your face in it. maybe the person is butt ugly and doesn't want his or her face in the shot. This is a cool idea though to paint yourself into your art work.

I think that this is a cool idea for a self portrait. I believe that it needs to show more of the persons face though. It would be pretty hard to get yourself to blend into the background that much and it gives you the idea that the person is trying to tell you that they blend in with everything else in the world.

I think this is an interesting idea, but I also think that a self portrait should feature the persons face more than this one. He's telling us that he likes to talk in phone booths or just on the phone in general. If a person doesn't show their face, it might mean that they're not satisfied with it.

After looking at these photos, I feel like you don't really need to see the person's face all the time. However, I feel like by blending in to your surroundings like this, you are saying that you are always hiding in real life or you don't want people to see you. Bolin is telling us in these photos how he seems to be considered part of the background in his life.

a self portrait doesn't have to show the persons face and the idea of camo pics is pretty cool. are the pictures photoshoped or did he really paint on himself.

I don't think that a self portrait needs to feature the persons face and some times I think it can make the self portrait more interesting to the person looking at it, in his work for example to have to look for the person in the picture and having the picture be just of him or his face. If the person does not show his face I think that it shows he has a mysterious personality or like his life to be a mystery to other or he is simply insecure.

I think that it is really cool that he can do that, for where ever it is. I don't think you need to see the persons face. I think he is telling us that no matter where you are you can fide your self. I think it says that they don't like people seeing them.

No, I don't think that the person's face ALWAYS has to be shown. I think that this is telling us that maybe he's creative and is trying a different version of art instead of the normal boring way! Psychologically, if a person doesn't include their face, it may seem to the lookers that that person is insecure about their looks or something to the degree of that they don't want someone to see their face.

I don't think a self portrait needs to have someone faces in it because it a "self" portrait, so its what you think of your self. If a person does not include their face in a self portrait i think it means they are shy.

I think a self portrait needs to have then in it with something that you can look and identify that it is them like a birthmark or something. I think that he is trying to say that he just blends in with society and isn't really noticed by anyone. When people don't put their face in a self portrait they probably don't like the way that they look and cant take a picture that is suitable for them.

I think that this is a really unique way to do a self portrait. I don't think that a self portrait necessarily needs to feature a person's face; I think that if a person chooses this method of a portrait it might show that they aren't comfortable with themselves. In these portraits it's almost like the people don't want to be seen, because they are hiding themselves in the background.

This is a great expression of the way people feel like they are being seen by others... Some people do feel invisible or feel like they blend in with todays world. I feel that this type of art work is an contemporary way to express ones true nature.

I don't think that a self portrait has to be of your face. I think a self portrait is meant to describe a person in a picture. I think a person who decides not to show their face is just being creative. This man is a very creative person.

A self portrait doesn't necessarily have to be of a person's face. He is telling that he is from China or wherever. And maybe about his heritage. Maybe he doesn't want his face in his picture because he is insecure about himself, maybe he is a kept person, is mainly too himself, and likes to blend into the background.

I think that this is really cool of this person doing this because i never really see people doing this or talking about this. i can tell that this person like to match with thing and paint him self in the picture.

This is very talented work. He works hard at what he does. It seems as if he wants to disappear from the world around him. He adjusts every part of him you can see, to the surrounding world. I wouldn't think of this as much a self-portrait, but as him trying to prove a point. Self-portrait i think of the person wanting to stand out, not blend in.

I personally don't think the portrait needs a persons face. I think he is telling me that he feels invisible or he feels like he can fit in with the world. I believe just because you do not include a face in the picture it means anything, everyone has different styles in photographing.

I think this idea is a pretty creative one. It would take a little time to do what they did. I think the self portrait can be whatever shows us what kind of person they are. He likes to blend in with his surroundings. It says more about them then a picture of their face will.

I think a self portrait needs to feature the person's face because it is a SELF portrait. If their face is not in the picture then I would consider it just another picture, not a self portrait. This guy in the pictures probably wants to be invisible or he just likes the idea of making people question things, like why and how.

I think it is clever. It would take a lot of work to make the colors the exact shade of the color in the background. I do think if it is considered a self portrait, there should be a face in it that you can clearly see.

I think its kind of weird but at the same time its kind of cool. Hes pretty creative with his work and he has a lot of free time to do that. No i don't think you need to feature the persons face in self portraits. to me i think hes telling us that he likes to blend in with everything.

I think this is a really cool idea.
I don't think a self portrait needs to have the person's face. Without the face the artist can tell you more about them self without the distraction of their face.if a person does not include their face in a self portrait,I think they either don't want to be seen or they want you to see who they are and not what they look like.

I don't think a self portrait necessarily needs to feature someones face, if someone doesn't want it to. I think it just says that the guy is creative but possibly self conscious of himself or wants to blend in. Not including your face in a picture could show that someone doesn't like themselves very much.

This guy seems like he has problems with self confidence. It looks like he just wants to blend in and not be seen. Maybe he needs help. But his art work is very impressive.
